This study of early America focuses on the ethnohistory of the colonial French, English, and Indian efforts to convert each other.'' Our speaker, Dr. James Axtell concentrates on social and cultural interaction. He treats French and English missionary efforts extensively, bringing out, with telling examples, the reasons for the relative success of the French Jesuits' adaptive approach. Dr. Axtel presents new perspectives to reveal the longstanding English desire to destroy Indian "pride'' and in detailing the many successful conversions of captive whites to the Indian way of life.
