“We cannot expect that a nation that has lost its memory will keep its vision.”
Dr. Bruce Cole

2007-2008 Schedule of Lectures - Great Americans Biography Symposia Series
This grant program focuses on fourth, fifth, and eighth grade teachers, the grades at which American history is explicitly taught. The grant includes professional learning opportunities for teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to teach American history in exciting new ways.
The following professional development activities have been developed for teachers:
- Annual keynote address from a nationally recognized historian,
- Biographies of great Americans and professional development symposia,
- Age-appropriate American biographies with lesson plans,
- Summer Travel Institutes to historic sites,
- Traveling panel exhibitions on U. S. history themes,
- Mentoring for teacher support and for program evaluation,
- Teaching American History grant website with online resources.
This project will produce better-educated teachers who will engage students in the study of history by building their knowledge of historical facts and content and raise their awareness of the value of civic involvement. Study travel will allow teachers to build knowledge of the great people, places, and events that have shaped the United States.
