America: The Experiment – The Experience – The Echo
2009-2010 History Illuminaria Symposia Series
An American History and Culture Program
Designed for teachers of grades 3/4/5/8, this professional development program will enable teachers to become more knowledgeable about our nation’s history and explores the connections between American history and culture. This program aims to reach participants on both personal and professional levels, treating them as capable adult learners who are eager for enriching learning experiences.
Participants complete brief readings (selected non-fiction text, primary source documents, or articles from professional history journals/magazines), then attend symposia led by visiting historians. The morning session is devoted to gaining additional content knowledge, with the afternoon session devoted to instructional methods and best practices in teaching American history.
Each participant receives instructional units for each featured historical era, grade-appropriate non-fiction literature for classroom instruction, along with music and art samples of the era.
